The Grand National 2011 is the most expected horse racing event in the world and it will take place next April at the Aintree Race Course in England. Many bizarre incidents have taken place in this very course in the previous editions of the race. Let us take a look at some of those incidents.
The 1956 race was one of the most heart breaking ones. The horse names Devon Loch owned by the Queen Mother was piercing the field and was clearing every other horse by yards. Devon Loch was running towards an obvious victory when the unexpected happened. Only a few yards before the finish line, the horse collapsed on the floor. If it had crossed the finish line, it would have been the fastest time on the course. Many explanations have been provided to state the cause of the horse’s behavior but the exact reason remains a mystery.
This incident even formed a phrase of its own – “to do a Devon Loch” is used to describe a failure which was caused at the very last moment. Let us hope that no one does a Devon Loch at the Grand Nationals 2011!
